Meanwhile, pieces by JACK's friends, Caroline Shaw and John Zorn, connect us to our musical forebears, using ancient harmonies, imitations, games, and secret messages as the jumping off point for unexpected journeys through magical, amorous, and dangerous tales. Closing the program with a quest for spiritual renewal, George Crumb's theatrical Black Angels uses distorted reference to ancient music and impressionist colors to plumb the depths of the human struggle in times of war.
